How many days do I have to contact the Social Security Administration (SSA) regarding my SSA Tentative Nonconfirmation (mismatch), and what documentation should I take with me when I visit the SSA?

You must visit a SSA field office within eight federal government workdays of the date of referral. If you live in an area where there is a SSA Card Center, you must go there instead. (Note: if you received your SSA mismatch between March 2, 2020, and July 14, 2022, visit our page about Social Security Administration resuming operations to resolve your mismatch).

What to take with you to SSA:

  • Further Action Notice
  • All original documentation, for example:
    • Proof of your age (birth certificate or passport)
    • Proof of your identify (driver’s license or passport)
    • Proof of a legal name change if your current name is not on your SSN car (marriage certificate)
    • Proof of U.S. citizenship or status indicating that you have work authorization:
      • If a U.S. citizen – naturalization certificate, U.S. birth certificate, or U.S. passport, or
      • If you are not a U.S. citizen – Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card, I-766 Employment Authorization Document (EAD), or Form I-94, Arrival/Depart Record.
